BASF puts its faith in HAURATON heavy-duty channels

Special drainage requirements fulfilled during third stage of construction of BASF intermodal transport terminal

Products in the chemical industry require modern surfaces that meet extremely high quality standards for goods handling. The third stage of construction of the BASF intermodal transport terminal at the Ludwigshafen site is an example of this, and is pioneering with regard to innovation and safety. In order to ensure that the drainage solutions for the terminal meet the requirements for such a system, BASF decided to use specialist company HAURATON.

Made-to-measure drainage system for maximum loads

The planners decided to use the FASERFIX BIG BL drainage system for surface drainage. This has been specially developed for use in heavily used areas, and is extremely sturdy. The drainage system was specially adapted in many respects for this construction project: Additional drains at the top edges of the channels and additional multiple ductile iron grating screw connections fulfil the special requirements with regard to quality and durability.

The solid reinforced concrete channels at the plant at the Ludwigshafen site are also equipped with drainage openings beneath the top edge of the channel at one or both sides. "This means that the surface water that trickles onto the sealing surface via the paving on the container site is also led into the drainage channel via the drainage openings. The combination of this and the continuous seal of the channels at the channel joints and along the connecting surfaces means that the requirements of of the Federal Water Act can be fulfilled perfectly", explains Werner Gal, project leader at HAURATON.

Ductile iron gratings secured at 16 points for heavy weights

Channels with a nominal width of 200 mm were used. Balanced drainage of the surface water was achieved with the large retention volume of high channel type 020.

As far as the grating was concerned, safety was the top priority. The ductile iron gratings of class F 900 provide maximum stability, even with extremely heavy loads. And these can be extremely heavy loads at container terminals. HAURATON has adapted the locking facilities to this special project. As well as the standard eight boltless locking points per metre, the ductile iron gratings are secured with eight screw connections. They are therefore secured at 16 points. Therefore guaranteeing maximum safety. The site is now drained by four drainage sections, each 630 m in length.
